Elda is a city located in the province of Alicante, and is only 20 minutes away from Casa Rural Ubeda
As a city with very few natural resources, economic alternatives to agriculture had to be found and the town was forced to depend on industry and is now known as the city of shoes, especially women’s footwear.
Elda was an important communications route of the Alicante province, formed by the Vinalopó valley and became a stopping point on the route to Madrid. Cobblers used this route during the 19th century, and with the assistance of craftsmen from Almansa and Mahón, the first shoe factory was established. Thus the transformation of Elda into a shoe manufacturing centre began, and with the arrival of the railway, the city’s product’s were able to be transported and sold to major cities. The footwear industry of Elda is now recognized at international level and has many leading and famous ladies footwear industries as its clients
The city has developed in the direction of the Vinalopó river and shares its borders with the metropolis of Petrer, being separated only by a single street, with the houses on one side of the river belonging to Elda, and the other side, the houses belonging to Petrer
The present day city dates back to Moorish times and is sited around the former castle of the Counts of Elda.
